One of the pioneers in the field of artificial intelligence, Prof. Yann LeCun, has called such fears “utterly absurd,” according to the BBC, and dismissed them as unfounded.

Prof. Yann LeCun is quoted by the BBC as saying that although it’s possible, it’s still a long way off before computers reach human intelligence. He also stressed that if anything is deemed harmful, it shouldn’t be produced.

A UK government expert recently indicated that it would be necessary to outlaw some extremely sophisticated artificial intelligence systems in an interview with the BBC.

Prof. Yann LeCun is presently the head AI specialist at Meta, the parent organization of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. He shared the 2018 Turing Award with Geoffrey Hinton and Yoshua Bengio for their revolutionary contributions to AI. Prof. LeCun holds a different perspective and does not see AI as a threat to humanity, in contrast to his fellow pioneers.

Will AI rule the planet someday? No, he responded, “This is just a representation of human nature onto robots. LeCun adds that keeping AI research “under lock and key” would be a grave error.

Prof. LeCun said that people who expressed worry about the possible dangers of artificial intelligence were motivated by their incapacity to see how the technology might be properly made safe.

It would be like asking someone in 1930, “How are you intending to make a turbo-jet secure? In the same way that turbo-jets had not yet been developed in 1930, human-level AI had not either. The same thing will happen with AI, he said, just as turbojets were eventually designed to be extraordinarily safe and dependable.

According to the BBC story, Meta has launched a big AI research program with the goal of creating intelligent systems that are on par with human capabilities. The business not only does research but also makes use of AI technology to help find harmful content on social networking platforms.

At a press conference, Prof. LeCun spoke about his research in the area of Objective Driven AI, which aims to develop safe systems with memory, reasoning, planning, and common sense—qualities that aren’t currently present in popular chatbots like ChatGPT.

According to Prof. LeCun, it is inevitable that AI will surpass human intelligence at some point. He did admit that it may take many years, if not decades, for researchers to develop the fundamental ideas needed to reach such a milestone. People who express concerns about future computers performing at or above human-level capabilities are referring to artificial general intelligence (AGI) systems, which are similar to human beings in that they are able to solve a wide range of problems.

In response to a query from BBC News, Prof. LeCun said that the advancement of AGI will be gradual, possibly reaching an intelligence level equivalent to that of a rat’s brain. He emphasized that an AI system of this kind would continue to function in a monitored data center atmosphere and could be turned off if necessary. Prof. LeCun added that the most appropriate course of action would be to forgo building it completely if it is determined to be harmful.
