A competitor artificial intelligence system to ChatGPT and Google’s Bard has been created by Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook, but it’s taking a different approach by making it available without charge.

The next iteration of Meta’s AI large language model, known as LLaMA 2, will be made available for free for study and commercial usage, according to the company’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, who made the announcement on Tuesday.

The social media business has long maintained a sizable research staff of computer scientists committed to improving AI technology, much like industry rivals Google and Microsoft.

However, it has been eclipsed by the rush to cash in on “generative AI” programs that can produce original writing, graphics, and other types of media since ChatGPT’s introduction.

The social media business has long maintained a sizable research staff of computer scientists committed to improving AI technology, much like industry rivals Google and Microsoft. However, it has been overshadowed since ChatGPT’s release triggered a rush in an effort to stand apart from its Big Tech competitors.

Meta has also made an effort to be more transparent by providing a look at the data and code it uses to create AI systems. It was suggested that by being transparent, outside researchers would find it simpler to recognize the prejudice and toxicity that AI systems assume by assuming the writing and communication styles of actual humans.

According to Zuckerberg, “Open source drives innovation because it enables many more developers to build with new technology,” in a Facebook post published on Tuesday. Because more individuals can examine open-source software to find and address any problems, it also enhances safety and security. We’re open-sourcing Llama 2 because I think a more open environment would enable further advancement.

Zuckerberg cited Meta’s history of publishing the source code for its AI efforts, including as when it created the well-known machine-learning platform PyTorch.

According to Zuckerberg, users may download its brand-new artificial intelligence (AI) models directly or via a collaboration that makes them accessible on Microsoft’s cloud computing platform Azure “along with Microsoft’s safety and content tools.”

The partnership’s financial details weren’t made public.

Although Microsoft is listed by Meta as a “preferred” partner, Meta also stated that the models will be made accessible through other companies, including AI company Hugging Face and Amazon Web Services, which is Microsoft’s major cloud competition.

Microsoft is a significant investor in and collaborator with OpenAI, the company that created ChatGPT. Neither ChatGPT nor comparable products from Google or Microsoft are open source.
