Gautam Adani: Following Rebuilding, Dharavi Will Become A "State-of-The-Art World-Class City"

Gautam Adani wants to keep the character and inclusion of Mumbai’s Dharavi slum while transforming it into a state-of-the-art, world-class city.”

One million people will be relocated and businesses will be renovated as part of the redevelopment project, which will be under the direction of Adani Properties.

Mumbai’s vibrant and diverse neighborhood of Dharavi is being transformed, according to Gautam Adani’s plans. The chairman of the Adani Group shared memories of his first visit to Dharavi in the late 1970s, when he was enthralled by the area’s dynamic fusion of regional Indian cultures and languages.

In November 2022, Adani Properties won the contract to serve as the project’s principal partner and lead the slum’s redevelopment.

Gautam Adani acknowledged the difficulties ahead and the uniqueness of the project due to its size and complexity.

According to an opinion piece he published for The Hindu BusinessLine, the proposal would require relocating almost one million people and revitalizing the many companies and trades that were flourishing in Dharavi.

Gautam Adani stressed that the Dharavi residents will be at the center of the redevelopment’s human-centric makeover.

“The new Dharavi will reflect the quintessential character of Mumbai—the spirit, grit, unity in diversity, color, and determination—without losing the timeless essence of the old Dharavi,” Adani said.

Gautam Adani promised to establish an institutionalized framework to collect the opinions and thoughts of Dharavi’s people and all stakeholders in order to guarantee inclusivity and reflect the soul of Mumbai.

According to Gautam Adani, “the 21st century belongs to India,” therefore he pledged to build a state-of-the-art, world-class city” that would reflect a resurgent and self-assured India.

He personally promised that, as part of the rehabilitation plan, all qualified Dharavi inhabitants would be moved to new residences.

Adani reaffirmed his commitment to building new homes for qualified inhabitants and preserving Dharavi’s character throughout the development process.

Former heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson, who had indicated interest in visiting Dharavi, may find the neighborhood just as vibrant and active following the redevelopment, the man hopes.
