To access tweets, one must first register for a Twitter account on the social media site. Elon Musk, though, described the action as a “temporary emergency measure”.
Twitter will prompt users who attempt to see material to either create an account or login to a current account in order to access tweets.
The website encourages visitors to check in or create a Twitter account when they attempt to see a tweet while without signing in. Users may still access tweets that were embedded on other websites or that showed up in Google searches as of Friday.
“We were getting data pillaged so much that it was degrading service for normal users!” Posted in a tweet by Musk. He continued by saying that at least hundreds of firms were “extremely aggressively” harvesting Twitter data.
A disproportionately large number of customers received notices earlier this week that their accounts had been banned for a period of three days as a result of spam.
OPenAI, the owner of ChatGPT, and other artificial intelligence companies have used Twitter’s data to train their extensive language models. This has angered Musk, the former CEO of Twitter. According to Musk, he will file a lawsuit against people who stole “Twitter data and look forward to seeing them in court, which is (optimistically) 2 to 3 years from now”.
In a letter to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella in May, Musk’s attorney Alex Spiro requested the tech giant audit its usage of Twitter material on the grounds that the Windows developer had broken a contract over the use of the social media company’s data. By incorporating verification checkmarks into the Twitter Blue program, the firm has taken a number of steps to win back advertisers that fled the site under Musk’s ownership and boost subscription income.
In an effort to expand beyond digital advertising, Twitter earlier in the month revealed intentions to concentrate on creator, video, and commerce partnerships. Twitter has also started charging users for access to the application programming interface (API) used by third-party programs and researchers.
