A new AI-based app called NotebookLM has been made available by Google with the goal of accelerating learning. The program makes use of a potent language model to summarize and analyze text, come up with concepts, and provide answers. Users in the US are the only ones who can presently use it, and it only works with Google Docs.
In order to help individuals learn more quickly, Google has developed NotebookLM, a new customized AI-based note-taking tool. Project Tailwind, the original name of the new software, was used to introduce it during the Google I/O event in May of this year. It is now a beta version from Google Labs.
According to Google, it wants to rethink what note-taking software may be like if it were created from the bottom up using a potent language model. At the moment, the new AI is only accessible through Google Docs, but the search engine giant pledges to eventually include more formats. Additionally, users in the US may only use NotebookLM by joining a Google Labs waiting list.
In a blog post announcing the revamped notes app, Google stated: “NotebookLM is an experimental product aimed to harness the strength and promise of language models combined with your current material to achieve key insights quicker. Consider it as a virtual study assistant that can summarize information, clarify difficult concepts, and suggest new connections depending on sources that are selected.”
What sets NotebookLM apart from other AI applications?
With NotebookLM, Google hopes to eliminate or at least lessen the biggest issue with artificial intelligence systems like ChatGPT and Bard: “hallucination,” the phenomenon where a large language model (LLM) confidently generates incorrect information and answers a question with it.
Google believes that its source-grounding’ method efficiently builds a customized AI that is aware of the facts pertinent to you. Source-grounding enables the language model to look up information in your sources and notes. Google cautions users against simply relying on its app and implores them to compare the AI’s solutions with the original source material.
Features of NotebookLM
According to Google, NotebookLM can do three primary tasks in particular:
1. After uploading a Google Doc to NotebookLM, users will be able to produce a summary along with important themes and questions.
2. Regarding the papers they have submitted to NotebookLM, users can ask questions. Writers working on biographies, for instance, may post their research materials and post a query, “Summarize all the times Houdini and Conan Doyle interacted.”
3. Using the uploaded papers on NotebookLM, users will be able to come up with fresh ideas. A content producer may, for instance, contribute ideas for a new video and ask the AI to come up with a script.
