Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and Twitter, is now adding yet another business to his expanding portfolio. The wealthy businessman, who was a co-founder of the Sam Altman-led OpenAI, is now preparing to introduce xAI, a competing artificial intelligence company.
On Wednesday night, the organization’s website went up and stated that its purpose was “to understand the true nature of the universe.”
Elon Musk announces the creation of xAI as a rival to ChatGPT with the aim of discovering the universe’s actual nature. Executives from Google’s DeepMind, Microsoft, and Tesla, as well as academics from the University of Toronto, make up the team.
“Our team is led by Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX. We have previously worked at DeepMind, OpenAI, Google Research, Microsoft Research, Tesla, and the University of Toronto.”
“We have worked on and led the development of some of the largest breakthroughs in the field, including AlphaStar, AlphaCode, Inception, Minerva, GPT-3.5, and GPT-4,” an excerpt from the recently created x.ai website stated.
On July 14, xAI will host a Twitter Spaces talk.
Despite becoming a different firm from X Corp., xAI stated that it will “work closely with X (Twitter), Tesla, and other companies to make progress towards our mission”.
Musk and Jared Birchall (who manages his family office), according to a Bloomberg article citing a Nevada state filing with the Secretary of State, formed a company named X.AI in March of this year.
According to unnamed people familiar with the situation, the Financial Times reported in April that Elon Musk was in talks with Tesla Inc. and Space Exploration Technologies Corp. investors about contributing to the funding of an AI business.
According to the newspaper, the billionaire has purchased thousands of processors from Nvidia Corp. for the new project.
Coincidentally, the news was made only hours before an event hosted by Elon Musk and televised on Twitter Spaces that would discuss artificial intelligence with two influential US House legislators.
At 7 o’clock New York time, California Democrat Ro Khanna and Wisconsin Republican Mike Gallagher will have a 45-minute conversation with the founder of Twitter.
