MANIPUR VIOLENCE

Cases

In Manipur, where ethnic clashes have claimed at least 80 lives, yesterday’s violence left at least five people dead, including a policeman, and 12 others hurt.

According to ANI, new violence broke out in several areas of the state after alleged Kuki militantsusing high-tech weapons set a number of homes on fire in the Serou and Sugunu area. This occurs just before Home Minister Amit Shah’s trip to the violent state. A new altercation broke out in Imphal on Sunday, injuring security personnel, ahead of the visit by Home Minister Amit Shah to the violent state. According to a police official, the injured person was quickly admitted to Raj Medical City Hospital.

More than 75 people have tragically lost their lives in Manipur since recent ethnic violence broke out in the northeastern state.N Biren Singh, the chief minister of Manipur, declared on Sunday that security forces had successfully neutralised 40 armed “terrorists” who had been attacking civilians and torching homes prior to the start of the clashes. The purpose of these operations was to bring calm back to the state, which had been experiencing ethnic unrest.

At a press conference at the state secretariat, the chief minister asserted that the most recent conflict “is not between communities but between militants and security forces.”

Utilization of weapons

Assault rifles such as the M-16 and AK-47 as well as sniper rifles have been utilised by terrorists to target civilians. They visited several villages and set fire to houses. With the assistance of the army and other security forces, we have begun to take very aggressive action against them. About 40 terrorists were allegedly killed by gunfire,” Mr. Singh told reporters. The Chief Minister stated that the recent spike in violent attacks against civilians on the outskirts of Imphal valley appeared well-planned and are categorically condemned.

“With the assistance of the army and other security forces, we have begun taking very strong action against them. According to reports, 40 terrorists have been killed by gunfire,” Singh was cited as saying.

Four people have died in the past 24 hours as a result of rising unrest, according to a military source cited by AFP. A military source confirmed an increase in unrest, but he also stated that four people had died in the previous day.

According to the source, who wished to remain anonymous, “at least three armed miscreants — who were trying to set fire to empty houses and fired at the security forces when they tried to stop them — died in retaliatory firing.”

In Moreh, “one more armed miscreant was killed and three others, including two security personnel, were injured,” according to the source.

Reason behind the protest

After a “Tribal Solidarity March” was planned in the hill districts on May 3 to protest against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status, fighting broke out in Manipur. The northeastern states of India, which are located between Bangladesh, China, and Myanmar, have historically seen significant ethnic tensions, making the area unstable. The majority Hindu Meitei community living in and around the state capital Imphal and the predominately Christian Kuki tribe inhabiting the nearby hills were at odds during the most recent Manipur Violence, which took place in May.

Visit of Home Minister, Amit Shah

Amit Shah, the Union Home Minister, will travel to Manipur today, May 29, for three days in an effort to end the ongoing crisis. Both the Meiteis and the Kukis have been urged by Amit Shah to keep the peace and work to restore normalcy. In the past, Mr. Shah met with representatives of the Meitei and Kuki communities as well as other interested parties to discuss the steps being taken to bring peace back to the state. General Manoj Pande, the head of the army, visited Manipur on Saturday to assess the state of law and order.
