The White House was temporarily closed on Sunday after a cocaine substance was discovered within the US Presidential compound, according to The Washington Post.
The White House’s West Wing is where the white powder material was found.
The Oval Office, cabinet room, press room, offices, and workspace for the president’s advisers and staff are all located in the West Wing, a facility that is annexed to the executive residence where the president resides.
Joe Biden, the current president, was not present. On Friday, Biden and his family departed for Camp David, and on Tuesday, they arrived back at the White House, where the president was due to speak to the country’s teachers union and host a barbecue to commemorate US Independence Day.
Every day, hundreds of individuals enter or exit the West Wing of the White House.
When the DC Fire Department was asked to assess the object, they found it wasn’t harmful right away. For the substance’s quick test, the whole facility was evacuated.
The drug was identified as cocaine hydrochloride.
Soon after, the White House was reopened, and the powder was sent for more analysis.
The District of Columbia fire department was brought in to analyze and find that the material was not harmful, according to a statement from the Secret Service. It was also noted that the White House was closed out of an abundance of caution while emergency workers investigated.
“The item was sent for further evaluation, and an investigation into the cause and manner of how it entered the White House is pending,” the Secret Service stated.
