Despite its many advantages, there are worries that Apple’s AirTag could be used as a possible stalking tool. Apple took a number of actions to solve these issues, and now Google has also added new tools for Android customers. These capabilities are currently accessible to Android users after being introduced at Google I/O 2023.
A new feature is “Alerts for Unknown Tracking Devices.” You will be notified if an unidentified Bluetooth tracker is found nearby by your Android device. You may view a map showing the tracker’s movements while it is nearby and access more information about it by touching the notice. You also have the choice to use the tracker’s sound to help you covertly find it.
Users can learn more about the unidentified Bluetooth tracker after receiving a warning and being given instructions on what to do next. Some Bluetooth trackers, for instance, may reveal their serial numbers or divulge details about their owners, such as the last four digits of their phone number, when the gadget is brought close to the back of a user’s phone.
Users can use this information to identify the tracker’s owner and determine whether it is being used maliciously for stalking or if it was unintentionally left behind.
Google also added the “Manual Scan” option as a new feature. By going to Settings > Safety & Emergency Unknown Tracker Alerts and then touching the “Scan Now” button, users can access this capability.
The manual scan creates a list of nearby trackers that are currently disconnected from their owner’s device and takes about 10 seconds to finish. Users can get more information on what to do by choosing one of the listed trackers.
Version 6.0 and later Android smartphones are compatible with this new capability. Google hopes to improve user safety and provide them with more control over any tracking devices in their vicinity with these enhancements.
