Bharat NCAP and the way the Star Rating system will be given to vehicles

The Bharat New Car Assessment Programme (Bharat NCAP), a program for evaluating new cars, suggests a system by which cars in India will be given “Star Ratings” based on how well they do in crash testing. Nitin Gadkari, the Union Minister for Roads and Transport, stated in a series of tweets that the Bharat NCAP will act as a platform focused on the needs of the consumer, enabling customers to choose safer vehicles based on their Star Ratings and encouraging healthy rivalry among original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) in India to produce safer vehicles.

Contribution of Star Rating System to automotive safety

The Minister of Road Transport and Highways emphasized the need for Star Ratings for Indian automobiles based on crash tests, not only to guarantee passenger and structural safety but also to improve the export-worthiness of Indian automobiles.

According to Gadkari, the Bharat NCAP testing process will be in line with international crash-test methods while taking into account current Indian rules, allowing OEMs to have their automobiles examined at the country’s own in-house testing facilities.

According to him, Bharat NCAP would prove to be a crucial tool in developing our automotive industry and achieving our goal of making India the world’s leading automobile hub.

Based on how well they perform in crash tests, cars will be given one to five stars under the Bharat New Car Assessment Programme (Bharat- NCAP) five-star rating system, with zero stars denoting the lowest safety requirements. The evaluation of the vehicle’s overall performance is based on how well it performs in three major categories: adult occupant protection, child occupant protection, and safety assist technologies.

In order to encourage healthy competition among Indian OEMs to produce safer automobiles, Mr. Gadkari tweeted that “Bharat-NCAP will operate as a consumer-centric forum allowing customers to choose safer cars based on their star ratings.” In his words, taking such action will not only assure structural and passenger safety but also improve the export-worthiness of Indian cars, turning the sector into “Aatmanirbhar with the expedition to establish India as the number 1 automobile hub in the world.”

Manufacturers are not required to participate in the program, and models may be chosen based on popularity (sales of at least 30,000 units since the model’s introduction in the preceding calendar year) or by the authorities in its pursuit of public safety, or they may voluntarily submit their models for consideration. When a car is chosen depending on how well-liked it is, the base model is chosen and put to the test.

“The Bharat NCAP will inspire automakers to compete against one another for higher safety ratings. However, it should be made sure that the Authority is separate from the government and is derived from a group that includes insurance firms, consumer welfare organizations, the automobile sector, spare part manufacturers, etc., according to Rohit Baluja, President of the Institute of Road Traffic Education.
