On dark web markets, the ChatGPT credentials that were stolen were sold.

The cutting-edge artificial intelligence application ChatGPT is provoking discussions about the direction of technology. However, world leaders in politics and technology have repeatedly issued warnings about the possible abuse of generative AI systems.

The concerns came true, according to a report by Group-IB, which stated that 1 lakh ChatGPT accounts were hacked, exposing their personal information. The research noted that India saw the greatest amount of compromises.

A Singapore-based cyberspace business called Group-IB asserted that it has discovered more than 1 lakh ChatGPT accounts were stolen by getting access to the passwords.

India was leading the list with 12,632 accounts and in addition to it, Pakistan (9,217), and Brazil (6,531) were also amongst the highest three nations where consumers were affected by the cyberattack, according to the Threat Intelligence Unit of the Group-IB.

Traded data on the dark web

Furthermore, the majority of accounts traded on dark web markets for these obtained credentials were from the Asia-Pacific region.

Many technological experts, including Elon Musk, who requested the regulation of ChatGPT-like AI technology platforms, had their suspicions confirmed by the disclosures. The AI Act, which asks for the regulation of artificial intelligence platforms, was just introduced in the European Union.

The AI Act was the subject of a shocking disclosure by Time Magazine, which claimed that OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, Microsoft, and Google “lobbied” EU officials for a laxer AI regulation framework in the AI Act.

Globally, businesses and individuals are embracing platforms with generative AI that resemble ChatGPT to increase their productivity. People may communicate sensitive information using ChatGPT while providing instructions to the AI platform, which adds to its value. Many businesses have prohibited their staff from using ChatGPT, claiming the same justifications.
